The Apple Cheddar Turkey Panini is a deliciously satisfying sandwich combining savory roasted turkey, sharp cheddar cheese, tart Granny Smith apple slices, and a tangy honey-mustard spread. Grilled to crispy perfection on ciabatta rolls, this panini offers a perfect balance of flavors and textures, making it an ideal lunch or light dinner option.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 lb sliced roasted turkey breast
  • 1 large Granny Smith apple, thinly sliced
  • 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, sliced
  • 4 ciabatta rolls (or sturdy panini bread)
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp whole-grain mustard
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Handful of fresh arugula (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preparing the Bread & Spread: Slice each ciabatta roll horizontally and lightly butter the outer faces to ensure a golden crisp. In a small bowl, whisk together whole-grain mustard, honey, and apple cider vinegar until well combined. Spread this honey-mustard mixture evenly on the inner sides of each roll to add a tangy, sweet flavor that complements the turkey and apple.
  2. Seasoning & Assembling the Filling: Lay the sliced roasted turkey breast on a plate, sprinkle it evenly with salt, freshly ground black pepper, and dried thyme. Toss gently to coat each slice thoroughly, enhancing the mild turkey with aromatic seasoning. This step is vital for bringing out the depth of flavor in the sandwich filling.
  3. Building the Panini: Preheat a panini press or a heavy skillet over medium heat. If using a skillet, have a 6-inch press or another heavy pan ready to apply pressure on the sandwich. Layer the turkey slices, sharp cheddar cheese, thin apple slices, and a handful of fresh arugula (if using) inside the mustard-spread ciabatta rolls. Close the sandwich and place it in the panini press or skillet. Cook for 3–4 minutes on each side until the bread is toasted golden and crispy and the cheese has melted thoroughly.
  4. Resting & Serving: Remove the paninis from the press or skillet and let them rest for about 2 minutes. This allows the melted cheese to set slightly, helping the sandwich hold together when cut. Slice each panini diagonally for an appealing presentation and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a slice of ripe avocado or a drizzle of balsamic glaze inside the sandwich.
  • If you don’t have a panini press, using a heavy skillet with a weighted object on top works well to achieve similar results.
  • Fresh arugula adds a peppery bite but can be omitted for a milder taste.
  • Ensure the apple is sliced thinly so it warms slightly during grilling but retains some crunch.
  • You can substitute ciabatta bread with sourdough or other rustic breads that hold up well to grilling.
